After months of planning, prep and behind-the-scenes effort, the Paisley Pirates Podcast has officially launched — and who better to kick things off than the men leading the charge from behind the bench?
In Episode 1: The Coaches’ Cut, Head Coach Ian Turley and Assistant Coach Rab Henderson join host Calum Wilson for a candid, wide-ranging conversation about the passion, pressure and personality that drives this club forward.
This isn’t just a coaching debrief; it’s a genuine look into the heart of the Paisley Pirates. From how Ian and Rab came to work together, to why they continue to put in the hours, this episode blends big laughs with powerful insights on leadership, community, and what it takes to grow a successful, inclusive hockey club.
The chat covers everything from dressing room dynamics to youth development and the coaching culture they’ve built within the team. Rab, also Head Coach of the Scotland U19 squad, offers reflections on what he’s learned across both setups, and why watching young players mature into confident contributors is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
“There’s no divide in our changing room,” Rab shares. “It’s one, and it’s a good one.” Ian reflects on the turning point of the 2024/25 season: “The belief started to grow in the second half of the year. The boys saw what we were trying to do — and when it started to click, that was the highlight for me.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be the Pirates without a bit of humour. From custard creams and tea talk to “hidden secrets” from life behind the glass, this is an easy listen that brings fans closer to the people steering the ship.
Whether you’ve followed the Pirates for years or you’re new to the rink, Episode 1 offers a brilliant entry point into what this team is all about: resilience, camaraderie, and community-driven sport at its finest.
