About

The Paisley Pirates, established in 1946, stand as one of the oldest and most storied ice hockey clubs in Scotland and the United Kingdom. Based in Renfrew, they have been a cornerstone of Scottish ice hockey for decades, showcasing a rich history of competition and community involvement.

In the 1950s, the Pirates emerged as a dominant force in Scottish ice hockey. The 1953–54 season was particularly remarkable, as the team clinched the Autumn Cup, the Scottish Cup, and the Canada Cup, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in the sport.

Following these successes, the Pirates joined the British National League, competing against teams across the UK. However, the financial strain of extensive travel led to challenges in maintaining support, eventually resulting in the team's dissolution. The Paisley Mohawks briefly filled the void but couldn't replicate the Pirates' former glory.

The Pirates experienced a resurgence in the 1990s with the opening of a new ice rink in Paisley. They quickly made their mark by winning the Scottish Division One in their inaugural season. Subsequent participation in various leagues, including the British National League, presented challenges, but the team remained a resilient presence in Scottish ice hockey.

In 2006–07, the Pirates faced potential dissolution due to issues with their home venue, the Lagoon Centre. A timely move to Braehead Arena ensured their survival, and they celebrated by securing the Scottish Spring Cup that season, defeating the Dundee Tigers in the final.

The year 2010 marked a significant transition as a group of dedicated supporters took over the club, reaffirming its community roots. The Pirates joined the Scottish National League (SNL), where they continue to compete, demonstrating their enduring commitment to the sport and their fans.

In 2020, the Pirates announced a partnership with the Glasgow Clan of the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). This collaboration aims to strengthen both clubs, offering the Pirates commercial and marketing support while providing a pathway to elite ice hockey for junior players in the Greater Glasgow area.

Throughout their history, the Paisley Pirates have exemplified resilience, passion, and a deep connection to their community. Their journey reflects the challenges and triumphs inherent in sports, and they remain a beloved institution in Scottish ice hockey.
