The past week has shown, more clearly than ever, what makes the Paisley Pirates family so special — and what makes British ice hockey such a powerful community. From acts of generosity by opposition fans to a moving tribute for a beloved coach and supporter, it has been a week filled with compassion, respect and pride. And on Sunday night at Braehead Arena, the Pirates capped it all off with a hard-fought 3–2 win over the Dundee Rockets.
Whitley Fans Rally Behind Daniel McGowan After Stick Theft
During our recent away fixture at Whitley on 30 November, two sticks belonging to Pirates netminder Daniel McGowan were stolen — an incredibly disappointing thing for any player to experience.
But what followed quickly overshadowed the negative. As word spread, Whitley Warriors fans began raising money to replace Daniel’s equipment, showing real heart and reinforcing the strong relationship between both sets of supporters.
Daniel shared a message of thanks, expressing how touched he was:
“I’ve recently heard about your efforts to raise money to replace my stick, and I just want to say a heartfelt thank you. It’s incredibly kind of you, and I truly appreciate the thought behind it.
When you travelled to Braehead last week, you brought a brilliant crowd and some great people. We’ve always felt welcomed when we’ve been down to Hillheads as well, and the positive messages online have meant a lot.
Although losing the stick was disappointing, I know that one person’s actions don’t represent your whole fanbase. Because this time of year can be tough for many people, I don’t feel right accepting money for a replacement.
Nobody should be out of pocket for me. If possible, I’d love for the funds to be passed on to a local charity instead — that way, something good can come from a poor situation. Please don’t take this as me refusing your kindness, it’s very much appreciated. I just feel better knowing the gesture helps others who really need it.
Kind regards, Daniel McGowan #39”
In support of Daniel’s wishes, the Paisley Pirates will match the funds raised so far, ensuring the final donation to a local charity will be even more impactful. It’s a powerful reminder that while rivalry is fierce on the ice, there’s a shared respect and humanity across the sport.
We thank our friends at Whitley for their kindness and look forward to welcoming their travelling support when the Warriors return to Braehead on 14 December.
Honouring a True Pirates Legend: Remembering Hector “Heccy” Adam
Sunday’s home game began on an emotional note, with a warm, heartfelt 1-minute applause.
We gathered to remember Hector Adam: coach, supporter, mentor and friend. Known to many as Harry or Heccy, Hector made a lasting mark on Paisley hockey through decades of involvement. He coached numerous young players who would go on to become Pirates, including Chris Turley, Chris Wilson, and even Head Coach Ian Turley when they were just starting out.
More importantly, he was a genuinely loved and respected figure — the kind of person who helped build not just players, but people.
His daughter has kindly shared that the Pirates family will be welcome at his funeral, where Hector will make his final journey proudly wearing his Pirates top. It is a gesture that means a great deal to everyone at the club.
We will miss him dearly. Rest in peace, Hector — and thank you for everything.
Pirates Earn a 3–2 Victory Over Dundee Rockets in Emotional Home Clash
With emotions running high, the Pirates took to the ice with purpose and determination.
The opening goal came early thanks to Aiden Wilson, who stepped up and delivered a calm, clinical finish on a penalty shot, sending the home crowd roaring. It set the tone for the night — composed under pressure, relentless in effort.
Goals from Garry Simpson and Mikey Dobson followed, while the team dug deep throughout a physically demanding and tightly contested matchup.
At the heart of it all was Man of the Match Daniel McGowan, producing a standout performance in goal. After the week he’s had, he delivered the perfect response: focused, resilient and absolutely vital in protecting the lead during the final minutes.
The Pirates held firm until the final buzzer to secure a 3–2 win.
As the players saluted the fans, one message echoed louder than anything else:
“Hector, we hope you were watching up there — this one’s for you.”
